How to Do Deck Maintenance

As we approach summer, and the weather gets warmer we start to want to spend more time in our backyards. Barbeques, soaking up some sun, entertaining guests, and watching the kids play in the yard from the comfort of our decks. Before we can truly enjoy all those activities some much needed deck maintenance is first on the agenda. After a long damp winter grime, algae and dirt will have accumulated on all exterior surfaces, and your deck is no exception. This can lead to a very slippery surface, and if not dealt with can minimize the life expectancy of the deck. The first thing you will want to do at the arrival of warm weather is give it a thorough cleaning.

To achieve optimal results, follow our detailed guidelines:

  • Sweep all dirt, leaves, and other debris off the deck. Any organic material left on the surface for a prolonged time will deteriorate the coating, as well as the integrity of the boards.
  • Prepare a cleaning solution. The solution will need to have a detergent (also called surfactant), and bleach to kill any mold, mildew, and algae on a microscopic level. There are many ready-made solutions available on the market, so be sure to read the label to confirm there is bleach present in the ingredients.
  • Hose down the area. Starting with a damp surface will prevent the boards from just soaking up the solution, saving you wasted product.
  • Then get to work with a scrub brush and the cleaning solution. There are attachments for a broom handle, as well as hand-held options for those tight areas. Some products will need to sit on the surface for a few minutes to properly eradicate any microscopic growth, so be sure to read the instructions!
  • Rinse thoroughly! Make sure that you rinse all the detergent off the deck, any residue left behind could leave behind an unsightly deposit!

This method can be used on previously stained/painted decks, as well as unfinished decks.

Now that your deck has been cleaned, you can put it into use and get the most out of your deck going into the summer!
