Choosing colours is tough. Painting and repainting can get expensive, and when you decide to change colours mid-project, your cost as well as frustration levels can rise. In order to help guide you on your search for the perfect accent wall colour, here are some tips to get you started.
1. Get test samples and paint a section of the accent wall.
Before you start painting, make sure to get a few different paint samples and paint the samples on the wall. Lighting, space and other items in the room all contribute to the overall look and feel of the accent wall, therefore looking at the colours in the paint store can be misleading.
2. Don’t paint multiple accent walls in the same room.
The purpose of an accent wall is to draw the eye to one spot. Having multiple accent walls will be visually distracting and neither wall will “pop.”
3. Add your desired lighting.
Often homeowners forget about lighting when choosing colours. Do you plan on having a neutral, cold or warm light in the room? Each type will make your accent wall look different. In addition, decide beforehand where your lights will go. Are you purchasing new fixtures that will go on the accent wall? Will you have a light track on the ceiling shining down on it? Will there be lights above the artwork to highlight your favourite pieces? Make sure to answer these questions before you choose your colour.
4. Don’t shy away from bold colours.
Be brave. Take chances. With the right decor around the room and a bit of colour coordination, a bold accent colour will add life to your room.
